Passing in the Dark

I thought it was interesting to read that Randy, at the Utah Conservative Democrat Blog, is seeing progressives among the Republicans and some rather undemocratic things among the Democrats and has begun considering the possibility of turning into a Utah Progressive Republican. This comes at the same time as I look at the big-government conservatives all over the Utah Republican party and the rising profile of blue dog Democrats and I am becoming convinced that the last thing Utah needs is another Republican.

On the federal level I am convinced that whatever party the president is from should not control both houses of Congress (possibly should not control either house) – especially for any sustained period of time (meaning not more than two years).

As far as national politics are concerned I agree with you 100%. The inefficiency of mixed government is the only thing that can possibly keep the federal government under control.

    Great post.

    Thanks.

I had expected someone to say something along the lines of “If the president and Congress are never from the same party wouldn’t that impede government function?”

Off the top of my head, its seems like that’s kind of what the voters have gravitated towards on a national level. When the president is from one party, the Congress seems to generally switch to the other.

After enduring 6 years of total Republican control I sure hope so (and that’s with me generally leaning Republican).

The Congress already switched. In November we’ll find out if we’re headed for more one-party rule nationally.

Which is actually kinda interesting, considering all the “no to one-party rule” we hear from local Democrats.

Yes, Congress switched and Congress is looking good for the Democrats again this year. If we get a Democrat for president as well as a Democrat-controlled congress then I will be hoping that the Republicans can get back in charge of Congress in 2010. If we elect McCain then I hope Republicans don’t regain control in 2010.
