Pre-Announcement

Looks like Mark Shurtleff just made an accidental pre-announcement about running against Senator Bennett:

Mark Tweets

Of course what his choice is should be a surprise to nobody. I thought it interesting that he’s talking up how much he will be raising. My first thought was that he must be trying to scare off any competitors. Of course that was before I saw the later tweets:

. . . I’m announcing I’m running at 12 …

No, I just realized that I was responding to a text from u. I’m going to pull it off immediately

    Nice catch.

I think that this was a calculated move by Shurtleff. He saw how much press Bridgewater was getting and wanted to change the tune. Shurtleff’s entire handling of his senate race has left a bad taste in my mouth.

    Thanks Jason.

    Clay,

I had thought about that possibility that’s why my early assumption was that he was trying to scare of potential challengers (specifically Tim Bridgewater). His decision to pull the tweets does not negate that possibility. Regardless of whether this was a calculated move or a mistake I think that Shurtleff is trying to run an Obama campaign – new media technologies in addition to a traditional, high-fundraising strategy. I would prefer a much more grassroots approach because that’s how politics should word – from the ground up, not from the money down.
