I was surprised to hear that Larry Lessig had declared that he would run for the Democratic nomination. Having followed his work on intellectual property law for years I have always liked Larry because he has proven to be someone who has a solid understanding of the information age – which is uncommon among elected officials. With that background I was really hopeful that he would be a good candidate.

Unfortunately this promise killed any chance of being endorsed:

If elected, he says he will be the first “referendum president,” promising to serve only as long as it takes to pass his Citizens Equality Act of 2017 — a bill aimed at reforming campaign finance, voting rights, and Congressional representation. Once the bill is passed, Lessig said he would then step down, handing over the reins to his vice president.

Sadly, Larry isn’t running to be president, he is running to enact a particular piece of legislation. I can’t endorse Larry Lessig for president. Even if the legislation were correct and very important (which is a matter for debate) I would consider it irresponsible to endorse someone in hopes that he chose a good vice president to succeed him.

George Pataki seems to be running for president simply because there was no clear front runner for the GOP nomination. His campaign website doesn’t even talk about issues so I’m left to conclude that his platform is “as a former governor of New York my name has been in the media much more than the governor of Idaho so I may as well give this campaign a shot since my name has been floated as a potential presidential or vice presidential candidate in previous election cycles.”

If voters want to know where Pataki stands on anything they either have to follow campaign news very closely (because he gets hardly any coverage in the crowded field) or else they have to go to his Wikipedia page – where they will find a significant number of positions that really don’t agree with much of the national GOP voting base. (That’s only a strike against him because he’s seeking the GOP nomination – otherwise it wouldn’t play into my evaluation for this series.)

I went into this with no opinion of George Pataki but I conclude that as a candidate he is simply a placeholder in case the voters reject all the candidates who are really trying to win the nomination. I can’t endorse George Pataki for president since he gives me absolutely no reason to think of him as anything more than a fallback option.

It would have been so easy to not give The Donald a fair shake in my candidate evaluations and simply say that his arrogance and tone automatically disqualified him as a candidate. Considering how much support he has even as his sophomoric personality has been on public display I think it is important to treat him as a serious candidate and study his campaign itself rather than the media coverage of his campaign.

Every candidate should be able to sound at least as presidential as Bob Hargis. He states his positions confidently and none of his positions are too idealistic to be plausible. In spite of that, Bob Hargis is not prepared enough for my endorsement.

Charles Maxham

Charles Maxham isn’t really running for President – he’s running to make a protest that our political system is an established system. He is right that the system is heavily tilted in favor of people within the system, but he seems to think this is a result of some evil conspiracy. The fact is that it is a system which has developed over time so that there is a certain equilibrium and a huge amount of inertia that makes change difficult. I won’t argue that the system is perfect, or that it should just remain as it is, but it is normal. If you want a system that is more responsive you must have a smaller system.

If Charles Maxham wants to change our country he should start with something smaller so that he understands the system better. Perhaps he will come to appreciate how natural our current political reality is and will be better prepared to make changes to it.

Jon Greenspon

I can’t figure out what is motivating Jon Greenspon to run for President. Nothing that I can find suggests that he has anything to offer the country except his willingness. If somehow he were to become President I have no doubt that he would not be the one running the country. That’s no way to get endorsed.

Joe Schriner

There’s nothing average about 9 years of endlessly campaigning to become President, especially for a guy who has no monetary wealth. Joe started running for President in 1998 and has never really stopped since. He declared his candidacy for 2008 the day the 2004 elections were held.

I have no reason to doubt his sincerity in wanting to become president, but I see nothing about Joe Schriner that suggests that he is actually up for the job, except that he obviously has nothing else demanding his time. Though his campaign style is intriguing it certainly does not merit my endorsement.

Wayne Root is an idealist. If he were president he would try to remake the face of our nation and our government. many of his ideas have their place, but if he were to be elected his single term would be marked by radical inaction and broken promises as everything he talked about failed to materialize. Admittedly this would not likely be cause by a lack of effort on his part.

I can’t endorse a candidate who is doomed to disappoint even himself.

Alan Augustson

Learning about Alan Augustson turned out to be much less pedestrian than I had expected. I anticipated that I owuld find a candidate like so many other unknowns. I found instead a person who has some very good ideas that are not being shared as widely as they should. I found myself debating about whether he should be endorsed. In the end I realized that, while his ideas deserve a wider audience because our political discussion of issues is often too narrow to be useful, he would not be able to lead the country.

We need a broader discussion that would come from some more obscure candidates getting more public attention, so this is almost an endorsement, but we also need a President who can get things done, and the current political climate would not allow Alan to do that even if he were elected.

Update 7/3/2007: Alan has decided to abandon his presidential bid in favor of running for the Fifth Congressional District of Illinois.

David Koch

I discoverd David Koch I immediately went to look at his campaign sight because I was curious about this unknown candidate from my home state. One way that he has set himself apart from other candidates is that he has already chosen a vice-presidential candidate. I like the way that he made his choice – he selected someone he knew and trusted who had a very different political outlook than he did. This is only functional because they know that they can work together, but I think this has the potential to add depth to a campaign.

In spite of this, David Koch suffers from the same problem that many unknown candidates from outside the mainstream of politics suffer. Like it or not, we have a system in place which we must work with. If our goal is to reform the system, we still need a certain amount of leverage to do that. This leverage is not to be found in David Koch.
