Tom Tancredo

Tom Tancredo is best known (where he is known) for his position on immigration. That led me to expect very little from him as a candidate. I was pleasantly surprised to find a candidate who seems to have a very down-to-earth perspective. From my perspective he would be a capable president who would tackle the issues in a straightforward manner. I would expect him to work with others while standing for his principles.

I am happy to endorse Tom Tancredo for President.

UPDATE 5/21/2007: Based on further information resulting from comments below, I have concluded that I cannot endorse Tom Tancredo. I am not convinced that he is committed to many of the positions that he claims to hold – with the exception of his position on immigration. I fear that he is doing nothing more in this presidential run than muddying the waters of the Republican primary.

You mean the draft dodger that now wants to be commander in chief. Might want to research your candidate a little more before endorsing – Where was Tom Tancredo during Vietnam?

He wouldn’t be the first. Would you care to cite a source on that so I can follow up?

As a Republican student activist, Tancredo spoke out in favor of the Vietnam War. After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado in June 1969, he became eligible to serve in Vietnam. Tancredo said he went for his physical, telling doctors he’d been treated for depression, and eventually got a “1-Y” deferment.

depression! Yea my Dad and whole bunch of other people were depressed while they were answering the call made by our country.

If you want a real American that probably has similar views to Tancredo but wasn’t a draft dodger then take a look at Duncan Hunter, I don’t agree with either one of their immigration stands but at least Duncan Hunter served our country when called, he served in the Army in Vietnam in the Airborne and as a Ranger! I gotta give props where they’re due. Hunter’s a total badass. Note: his son is in the Marines and served in the initial Iraq deployment in 2003. So he’s one of the few congressman (along with Biden) to have “skin in the game” as they say, when it comes to Iraq.

Even Ron Paul served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force from 1963 to 1965 and served in the Air National Guard from 1965 to 1968.

Thanks for the citations. I’ll go take a look.

For anyone who reads this endorsement without being a follower of my blog I would like to point out that:
I have already looked at Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul.
This endorsement is part of a series in which I set out criteria for endorsement in advance. I have endorsed about a dozen candidates based on those criteria – I am not trying to say that Tom Tancredo is my candidate, only that he met the criteria.

I hope that puts some context on my endorsement. If I find sufficient reason I can and will drop my endorsement.

The later two links were obviously anti-Tancredo but lacked any references for their most extreme allegations against him. I found them to be insufficient to influence my endorsement.

The Denver Post article, on the other hand, was enlightening. If it hadn’t been 8 months old I might have caught it. Because of that new information Tom fails to qualify for my endorsement.
